Poker
Are you sharp enough to read your opponent’s calls? Do you have the patience, judgment and mental toughness to become a poker shark?
Find out by playing online, as West Virginia is currently one of just a handful of states where online poker sites are legal.
And because playing online poker was only legalized a few years ago, the top poker sites offer you a range of juicy bonuses to entice you to play. And kickstart your bankroll.
Which is just one area where playing online poker in the Garden State outstrips playing poker in a brick-and-mortar casino.
The aim of the game is to make the strongest poker hand. Or bluff others into thinking that’s what you’ve got.
A poker hand consists of five cards. Higher-ranked hands beat lower-ranked hands. And where you have the same kind of hand, higher-value cards beat lower-value cards. The ace is the highest.
You’ll need to learn which hands beat what. Here are the main hand-ranking categories in order:
- Royal Flush
- Straight Flush
- Four of a Kind (Quads)
- Full House (Boat)
- Flush
- Straight
- Three of a Kind (Triplets/Trips)
- Two Pair
- One Pair
- High Card (Nothing/No pair)
You’ll also need to get to know the table positions and how this can affect a player’s strategy. Because in poker, position is everything.
The position of the dealer determines the order in which the ‘blinds’ are put up and players bet. And a large chip (‘button’) shows you whose turn it is to be the dealer. This rotates after each hand.
Everyone is dealt two cards. The two players sitting clockwise from the dealer button then put up forced bets: a ‘small blind’ and a ‘big blind’. Ensuring there are always chips on the table.
You’ve got to at least match the big blind to progress to the next round.
The betting rounds then begin and you bet according to how confident you feel in your hand. Or how confident you feel in your ability to bluff your opponents.
You have five options:
- Call – match another player’s bet or raise
- Raise – increase the size of your existing bet in that round
- Fold – withdraw from the hand, surrendering your cards and any bets you’ve made in the current round
- Check – pass the action to the next player without having to make a bet (you can only do this if no one has bet so far in the round)
- All in – play all your remaining chips when you don’t have enough left to call (you can only win the number of chips in the pot up to this point)
Three ‘community cards’ (the ‘flop’) are dealt face up after round 1. A fourth (the ‘turn’) after round 2. And a final card (the ‘river’) after round 3.
After the fourth and final round of betting, if two or more players haven’t folded, the game moves on to the showdown. All remaining players have to show their cards. And the player with the best hand wins the pot.
