Blackjack
Also known as 21, online blackjack is a game of strategy and math. Chance and skill. A game that’s all about beating the dealer.
You and any other players each face a head-to-head battle. Aiming to better the dealer’s hand without busting.
It’s also a game with over 100 rule variations. And in NJ you’ll find online blackjack sites with games such as Single Hand Blackjack, Multihand Blackjack, Atlantic City Blackjack, Vegas Blackjack and many others.
But the basic rules of blackjack are simple to learn. Which is what makes it such a popular card game.
The aim of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand. There are two ways you can do that:
- By having a total that’s higher than the dealer’s. or
- By not going over 21 and busting when the dealer does.
You place your bet. Each player is then dealt two cards – the dealer having one face up and one face down.
Cards 2 through 10 count their pip value, face cards (jack, queen and king) count as 10, while an ace can count as either 1 or 11.
You lose your bet if you bust or when your total hand is less than the dealer’s hand.
When you’ve been dealt your hand, you must decide whether to stand, hit, split, double down or surrender:
- Standing means you’re happy with the total of your cards and want to stick with what you’ve got.
- Hitting means you want the dealer to give you another card.
- If you have an identical pair of cards, you can choose to split them. Making another bet equal to your original bet. And playing each card as a separate hand.
- Doubling down allows you to double your original bet. In return, you receive one final draw card.
- Provided the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack hand (an ace and a 10-value card), some casinos will give you the option to surrender. You forfeit your initial two-card hand and sit out the rest of that round. But only lose half your bet.
Most games will also offer you the chance to win various side bets.
Online blackjack can be played with a single deck of cards or multiple decks.
The more decks used, the greater the house edge. But also the greater the chance for you to get two face cards, increasing your odds of winning.
